Kemençe neden zor bir enstrüman?

Leyla-Diana: Müziğe ilginiz ne zaman ve ne şekilde başladı, ailenizde müzisyen var mı?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Ailem müziksever ve küçük yaşlarımdan beri müzik eğitimimi destekledikleri için onlara müteşekkirim. Oldukça kapsamlı bir müzik eğitimim oldu: Klasik gitar ve batı müziği bir yanda, Bizans müziği ve Yunan halk müziği diğer yanda.

Leyla-Diana: When and how did your interest in music start? Are your parents musician?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: My parents are music lovers and I thank them for supporting my musical education since I was a small kid. I had quite a full round musical education: classical quitar and western music on the one side and byzantine music and greek folk music on the other.

Leyla-Diana: Kemençe çalınması hayli zor enstrümanlardan biri, kemençeyi seçmenizin sebebi neydi?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: 14 yaşında Atina`da iki konsere gitmiştim. Birinde, büyük Türk virtüoz İhsan Özgen çalıyordu, diğerinde Ross Daly, Girit liri çalıyordu (Bu arada, Girit liri ve klasik kemençe birbirine çok yakın akrabadır). Böylece bu enstrümanın sesi hoşuma gitti ve bir tane satın aldım. Çalmanın zor olduğu doğru, sanıyorum bunun nedeni eski bir enstrüman olması, fakat kolay ya da zor enstrüman yoktur, hepsinin kendi zorlukları vardır.

Leyla-Diana: And we know that this instrument is not easy to play. What was the reason for choose Kemence?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: When I was 14 years old I attended two concerts in Athens. In one of them there was the great turk virtuoso Ihsan Özgen playing klassik kemence and on the other there was Ross Daly playing the cretan lyra. (Cretan lyra and klassik kemence are very close relatives by the way). So, I liked the sound of this instrument and I just ordered one. It is true that it is quite difficult to play because it is an old instrument I guess, but I believe that there are not difficult or easy to play instruments. All of them have their difficulties.

Türk, Bizans ve Yunan müziği arasındaki ilişki

Leyla-Diana: Belki biraz Bizans ve Yunan müzikleri üzerinde durabiliriz. Kendi aralarındaki bağlantıları ve Türk müziğine ilginizle ilgili bir şeyler söyleyecek olsanız?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Bizans, Osmanlı, Türk ve Yunan müzikleri birbiriyle çok yakın akrabalar. Doğu Akdeniz ve Ortadoğu`nun müthiş modal geleneğini Arap ve İran müziğiyle birlikte oluşturuyorlar. Kişisel olarak, her zaman Türk halk ve klasik müziğiyle çok ilgili oldum ve Türkiye`de Türk müzisyenlerle güçlü ilişkiler kurmaktan dolayı çok mutluyum.

Leyla-Diana: Maybe we can talk a little bit about Byzans and Greek Music and the connection ecs. other, than the connection with Turkish music. So you have the interest about Turkish music.

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Byzans, Ottoman, Turkish and Greek music are very close relatives too. They form what is known as the great modal tradition of eastern Mediterranean and the middle east together with arabic and Persia music as well. Personally I have always been very interested in Turkish music both folk and classical and I feel so happy that I have built strong relations with Turkish musicians in Turkey.

Leyla-Diana: Derya Türkan ile birlikte yaptığınız proje den bahsedebilir misiniz?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Derya Türkan, kurduğum güçlü ilişkilerimden en güçlü olanı. Kendimi ona bir kardeş gibi yakın hissediyorum. Bir kaç yıl önce, "Letter from Istanbul / İstanbul`dan Mektup" albümünü İstanbul geleneksel halk ezgileriyle kaydettik ve o günden bu yana konserlerde birlikte çalmaya devam ediyoruz. Yakında Türkiye`de Kalan Müzik tarafından yeni bir albümümüz daha yayınlanacak.

Leyla-Diana: Can you talk about your project with Derya Türkan?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Derya Türkan is the strongest of these relations. I feel so close like he is my brother. Several years ago we recorded "Letter from Istanbul" with repertoire from the folk traditions of Istanbul and we keep playing together in concerts ever since. We will soon have a new recording published in Turkey fom Kalan records.

Son albümü "Eight Winds"in hikayesi

Leyla-Diana: "Eight Winds" hakkında biraz konuşalım isterseniz. Lütfen bize albümün varsa hikayesinden bahsedebilir misiniz?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: "Eight Winds", dörtlümle geçen yıl ECM için kaydettiğimiz bana ait bestelerin ve pekçok emprovizenin yer aldığı albümüm. Uzun zamandır beste yapıyorum ancak daha önce bunları hiç yayınlamamıştım, bu nedenle 20 yılımı kapsayan "Eight Winds" bana sanki otobiyografimmiş gibi geliyor. Tüm ezgiler bu dönemdeki kişisel durumlarımla bağlantılı. Öte yandan, yaratımın kişisel bir şey olduğu doğru. Bu doğal. Ancak, zor olan diğer insanların da bu kişiselliği hissetmelerini sağlamak. Leyla-Diana: And about your album Eight Winds. Please tell us the story and if the songs have a story can you explain it?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: "Eight Winds" is the recording a made with my quartet for ECM last year which includes compositions of mine and lot`s of improvisations too. I kept composing music for a long time but never published anything before so Eight Winds feels like an autobiography to me which covers almost two decades. All tunes are connected with a very personal situation of mine during this period of time. On the other hand it is true that creation is a personal thing. That’s fine. Nevertheless, the difficult thing is to make it feel “personal” for other people too. This is what I believe music is all about. Communication.

Tüm hayalim çocuklarımla ilgili

Leyla-Diana: Yeni projeleriniz hakkında söylemek istedikleriniz var mı? ...ve en büyük hayalinizi sorabilir miyim?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: Şu an ikinci albümüm için dörtlümle repertuvar üzerinde çalışıyorum ve canlı performanslara devam ediyoruz. Mutluyum çünkü bu sezon yurtdışında çok ilginç konserler vereceğiz. Ben bir babayım, bu nedenle iyi bir baba gibi tüm hayalim çocuklarım ve onların gelecekleriyle ilgili.

Leyla-Diana: About your new projects. And may i ask you what is your biggest dream?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: For the moment I work on the repertoire for the second album with my quartet and we keep playing live. I am happy because we will have some very interesting concerts abroad this season. I am a father so, like a good father all my dreams are involving my kids and are about their future.

Leyla-Diana: ve son sorum! Elinizde bir sihirli değneğiniz olsaydı, kendiniz ve dünya için neler yapmak isterdiniz?

Sokratis Sinapoulos: It would be too optimistic to stop wars in our neighorhood or elsewhere even with a magic hand. I would try to do it differently. I would try to make all people to listen to some good music for an hour per day. Maybe this could smoothe our anger and aggressiveness.
