Önce kısa, ardından sıkılmadan dinlenilen iki davul solosuyla izledik Abadey’i.

Melissa Aldana was on the Istanbul CRR stage with her creativity fueled by team interaction

Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall is undoubtedly one of the most valuable concert venues in Istanbul. Recently, I took a look at my collection of concert tickets that I have been before. Most of the things that took my attention among them took place in this hall. I have seen lots of legends there. We watched Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Wayne Shorter, Enrico Rava, John Surman and many other important names on this stage. I had not been to CRR since the pre-pandemic Philip Catherine and Monty Alexander concerts. Last week, I took the path of old friend Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall to watch the Chilean born saxophonist Melissa Aldana concert. I reached the hall by walking through the lovely cats from Nişantaşı Park. I observed the sadness that there was not a crowd in the hall, which I arrived with longing for the busy queues at the door before the concert, concert venues and live stages increased. As the event alternatives became more numerous for the audience, it became difficult to choose quality events such as this one. A few old friends, who came together with the awareness of the contracts we signed wholeheartedly for the jazz lovers club, came together at the door before the concert. We praised each other for Aldana and raised our expectations to the sky level. We greeted our friends, to whom we gave invitations to the concert, at the door, as guests of our jazz portal Cazkolik.com. Instead of my musician friends who wanted to watch Aldana but unfortunately had to miss the Aldana concert because there were concert performances, I took my place in the hall with the responsibility of watching the concert and conveying it to our readers with my notes.

Aldana took the stage with master guitarist Mike Moreno, bassist Pablo Menares and young and talented drummer Kush Abadey in order from left to right according to their placement on the stage. Those who recognize Aldana's phrasing technique with melodic expressions from their albums may not have liked it very much because the performance is not very swingy in general, but I think there was an Aldana on the stage that met expectations with its fluent harmonic lines, music approaching the acoustic post bop tradition with a strong emotion, and sensitive stance and passion for social issues. Almost unique among tenor saxophonists, she is very wll-known for delivering the same sound quality on all recordings, and in concert she had an enduring creativity fueled by the individual skills of her side musicians.

That night, in addition to her own compositions, a composition by bassist Menares was played from a wide repertoire together with Monk composition Reflections. When she returned to the stage with applause at the end of the concert (encore), she played the George Shearing composition “Conception” in an extremely fluent, dynamic and melodic form. In the concert, we watched with pleasure that she started the piece herself, as a fictional choice that has become traditional in every piece, and then she stepped back and opened up an improvisation space for the trio. In each piece, guitarist Moreno had his own solo partitions. But the moments that I enjoyed the most while watching were drummer Kush Abadey's plays like a drum'n bass drummer from time to time and the moments when he made the audience jump with the thunder-like crush cymbals. We watched Abadey with two drum solos that were short and long enough to be listened to without getting bored. Ears accustomed to the usual, smooth performances encountered the performance of an unexpected, distinctive quartet. Even though Aldana's up and down tempo keeping distracting the attention a bit, I chose to perceive this body movement as her dancing in the flow of the music.

After the concert, I had the chance to meet with Aldana at the backstage. She spoke with an absolute pleasure about her 3-day holiday in Istanbul. “I went to all the places to go and tasted all the delicious food to be tasted,” she said. She mentioned that she was in Istanbul for the first time and that she fell in love with this city. During our short conversation with drummer Adabey, I talked about Tyshawn Sorey, whom I likened to his "surprise performance" and "heavy drumming tone", and he talked about the smile in his eyes and the pride of being compared to a drummer he was inspired by. I hope we can get a chance to watch Melissa Aldana once again. Maybe at a jazz club evening or here again, it doesn't matter.
