Elvin Jones

Modern caz tarihinin en önemli davulcularındandır. Hank ve Thad Jones gibi şöhretli üyelere sahip önemli bir müzikal ailenin en genç üyesi olan Elvin Jones daha ziyade klasik John Coltrane Quartet`in (1960-1966) davulcusu olarak ün yapmakla birlikte grup lideri olarak yaptığı çalışmalar ve müzikte yarattığı etki bakımlarından da kayda değer bir kariyere sahiptir.

Pontiac, Michigan doğumlu Elvin Jones`un davula ilgisi küçük yaşta başlar. Kendisini teşvik eden ve kendine güven duymayı öğreten annesi olmuştur. 13 yaşında davulcu olmaya karar veren Jones günde 8-10 saat çalışır; gittiği her yere davul bagetlerini de götürmekte ve uygun her yüzeyde ritm tutmaktadır. Erken dönem idolleri Kenny Clarke, Max Roach ve Jo Jones gibi tanınmış isimlerden bando davulcularına ve the American Legion Drum Corps`a kadar zengin bir çeşitlilik gösterir. 1946-1949 yılları arasında Amerikan ordusunda görev yapar ve terhisinden sonra oldukça hareketli caz sahnesine sahip olan Detroit`te ilk profesyonel işini bulur. Sıklıkla Bluebird Inn`e takılmakta ve burada bazen davula geçmesi yolunda teklifler almaktadır, ancak Jones her seferinde şöyle düşünerek reddeder: "Bu müzisyenlerle birlikte çalmak haddini bilmezlik olurdu, çünkü bunlar tanıdığım en önemli kişilerdi." Bir zaman sonra tenor saksafoncu Billy Mitchell, Jones`u işe alır ve sanatçı kulüpte geçirdiği üç yıl boyunca aralarında efsanevi Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Grey ve Miles Davis`in de yer aldıkları birçok ünlü isme eşlik etme olanağı bulur. Jones`un bu dönem birlikte çalıştığı tanınmış müzisyenler arasında Tommy Flanagan, Pepper Adams, Barry Harris, Kenny Burrell, Milt Jackson, Lou Hayes ve Yusef Lateef de vardır. 1955 yılında Benny Goodman`ın orkestrasına katılmak için New York`a giden Elvin Jones Goodman tarafından işe alınmaz, ancak onun yerine Charles Mingus`un grubuna katılır. Jones sonraki yıllarda Bud Powell, Miles Davis, the Pepper Adams-Donald Byrd Quintet, Art Farmer, Harry "Sweets" Edison ve J.J. Johnson`la çalarak stilini geliştirme olanağı bulacaktır. Daha sonra 1960 yılında John Coltrane Quartet`e katılacak olan sanatçı bu deneyimlerinin üzerindeki etkisini şöyle anlatır: "Coltrane`e gelmeden önce Harry ’Sweets’ Edison ve J.J. Johnson`la müthiş deneyimler yaşama fırsatı buldum. Bu tecrübelerim olmadan hiçbir şey başaramazdım. Coltrane`in grubunun bir parçası olmam yolunda teklif geldiğinde ve bu teklifi kabul ettiğimde kendimi buna hazır hissediyordum; kendime inanarak evet dedim zira ev ödevimi yapmıştım. Bu yapman gerekenlerin bir parçası, izci modeli, sanki doktor olmaya hazırlanmak gibi: İnsanları öldürmek istemiyorum, onları iyi etmek istiyorum." Jimmy Garrison ve McCoy Tyner`le birlikte Coltrane`in grubunun önemli bir parçası olan Elvin Jones, 1966 yılına dek sürecek bu birlikteliği müddetince caz tarihinin en tartışmalı, etkili ve nihayetinde önemli müziklerinden birinin oluşumuna katkıda bulunur; "A Love Supreme" ve "Coltrane `Live` at the Village Vanguard" gibi mükemmel plak kayıtlarında çalar. Coltrane`le yaşadığı deneyimi şöyle anlatır: "Ta en başından son kez birlikte çaldığımız ana dek oldukça saftı. En etkileyici yönü de sürekli, kolektif bir öğrenme duygusuydu... Eğer insan ilişkilerinde mükemmel armoni diye bir şey söz konusuysa, bu grup belki de ona en çok yaklaşabileceğin şeydi."

Mart 1966`da Coltrane`den ayrılan Elvin Jones, Duke Ellington Orkestrası`yla kısa bir Avrupa turnesine çıktıktan sonra New York`a dönerek müzik kariyerindeki liderlik dönemine start verir. Yenilikçi bir müzik yapan piyanosuz trio`larında tenor, alto ve flütte Joe Farrell ve basta zaman içinde Jimmy Garrison, Bill Wood, Charlie Haden ve Wilbur Little yer almışlardır. Yine 1966 yılında Nagasaki`de tanışarak evlendiği Keiko sanatçının hem kişisel, hem de idari menajeri olur, ayrıca besteci ve aranjör olarak Jones`a yaratıcı yönden katkı sağlar. Elvin Jones eşinin "Mr. Jones", "Shinjitsu" ve "Zange" gibi bestelerini çalıp kaydetmiştir. Life dergisi tarafından "dünyanın en büyük ritmik davulcusu" olarak gösterilen Elvin Jones`un serbest-akıcı stili Christian Vander, Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix "benim Elvin Jones`um" diye çağırırdı) ve Ginger Baker gibi önde gelen davulcuları derinden etkilemiştir. 1971 yılında Zachariah adlı western filmde Job Cain adındaki bir kötü karakteri canlandıran Jones, kayıt ve performanslarını 1990`larda Elvin Jones` Jazz Machine adını alan grubuyla birlikte sürdürmüştür. Grubun zaman içinde üyesi olmuş müzisyenlerden bazıları şunlardır: Saksafoncular Frank Foster, Joe Farrell, George Coleman, Pepper Adams, Dave Liebman, Pat LaBarbera, Steve Grossman, Andrew White, Ravi Coltrane ve Sonny Fortune; trompette Nicholas Payton, piyanoda Dollar Brand ve Willie Pickens, keyboardist Jan Hammer ve basta Richard Davis, Jimmy Garrison, Wilbur Little ve Gene Perla. Müziğe olan derin bağlılığını "çalmak sadece geceleri yaptığım bir şey değil, benim hayattaki fonksiyonum" sözleriyle ifade eden Elvin Jones, sağlık sorunları yaşadığı son döneminde bile sıklıkla bir oksijen tüpü eşliğinde performanslarını sürdürmüştür. Sanatçı 18 Mayıs 2004`te kalp yetmezliği sonucu hayata veda etmiştir.
