Müziğiyle günümüzün sorunlarına da değinen caz dünyasının virtüöz üçlüsü PSM'de caz konserine geliyor

ECM’in kurucusu Manfred Eicher müziği 'zaman içinde duygular yaratmak için sesi kullanmak' olarak tanımlamış ama zamanın geleceğe mi yoksa geçmişe doğru mu olduğunun kararını dinleyiciye bırakmış.

20 Kasım akşamı Zorlu PSM Turkcell Platinum Sahnesinde izleyeceğimiz Vijay Iyer’in yeni albümü "Uneasy"de yol arkadaşları davulcu Tyshawn Sorey ve basçı Linda May Oh zaman içinde bir ileri bir geri hareket ediyor. Albümde geleceğe etki edecek günümüz toplumsal yaşam konularına da göz atılmış, geçmişten devralınan miraslara da “zaman yolcusu” bilinciyle yer verilmiş.

Albümde 10 parça yer alıyor. Parçaların ikisi uyarlama. İlk uyarlama 2017’de ölen Geri Allen’ın bir ucu cennete uzanan parçası "Drummer’s Song”. 1987’de “Open on All Sides in the Middle” albümünde nefeslilerle kaydedilen parçayı Iyer kendi albümünde minimal bir intro ile başlatarak uzun bas ve piyano solo bölümleriyle birlikte parçayı genişleten bir versiyonla kaydetmeyi tercih etmiş. Ana motifin güzelliği bu versiyonda daha öne çıkmış. Parçayı her yönüyle onurlandırmayı denemişler. Bu noktada, Geri Allen’ı saygıyla anmak isterim. Albümün diğer aranjman parçası ise Cole Porter bestesi "Night and Day". Porter’ın kulağa tanıdık gelen imzalarından biri. Özellikle, benim gibi iflah olmaz bir Joe Henderson tutkunuysanız, siz de parçanın “Inner Urge” albümündeki versiyonunu hatırlarsınız. Iyer de parçanın aranjmanı sırasında iyice incelemiş ve sonuçta keyifli bir versiyon meydana gelmiş. Parçadaki Sorey’in kısa ama yıldırım gibi davul solosu oldukça etkili, zaten muazzam parçayı iyice farklı seviyeye taşımış.

Vijay Iyer 2011 yılında koreograf Karole Armitage’in dans ekibi için prömiyeri New York Central Park Summerstage’de yapılan bir proje için müzik yaratmış. “Uneasy” albümünde Vijay Iyer Trio bu çalışmayı kolektif bir keşif olarak yeniden icat etmeye çalışmış. Albüm içinde sürekli değişkenlik gösteren bir yoğunluk ve devamlı bir üst kademeye yolculuk eden ritmik sürüş mevcut. Albümün açılış parçası “Children of Flint” toplumun geri kalanından sistematik şekilde ırkçılık baskısı gören çocuklara adanmış bir parça. Bu konu günümüzde güncelliğini koruyarak toplumun geneline zarar veren bir hal almış durumda.

Albümde Iyer’in favori parçası ise “Combat Breathing”. Bu parça kolonisizleştirme ve kolonileştirmenin psikopatolojisi konusunda 20. yüzyıl düşünürlerinden Frantz Fanon’ın bir sözünden temel alıyor. Albümün merkez noktasında yer alan parçalardan biri “Augury”. Iyer’in pandemiden hemen önce bestelediği solo piyano parça “müneccimlik” anlamına geliyor. Parça belki de Iyer’in yaşanacak günleri görme yöntemidir. Belki de o bir kahindir.

Albümde bunlar gibi pek çok hikâyenin ve konunun meydana getirdiği 72 dakikalık bir keşif yolculuğu var. Bazı parçaların hikâyelerini ben anlattım, geri kalanları ise sizin keşfetmenizi bekliyor. Manfred Eicher, founder of ECM, defined music as using sound to create emotions in time. But it's up to the listener to decide whether time is toward the future or toward the past. On Vijay Iyer's new album Uneasy, he and his companions drummer Tyshawn Sorey and bassist Linda May Oh travel back and forth in time. The issues of today's social life that will affect the future were also taken into consideration, and the legacies inherited from the past were also included. They acted with the consciousness of a “time traveler”, as I like to use it from time to time.

There are 10 tracks in the album. Two of these pieces are covers. The first cover is “Drummer's song”, the piece written by the divine Geri Allen, which we lost in 2017, reaching heaven on one end. Allen recorded with woodwinds on the album “Open on All Sides in the Middle” In 1987, in this version Iyer Trio preferred to start with a minimal intro and with long bass and piano solo parts. The beauty of the main motif is more prominent in this version. They tried to honor the piece in every aspect. At this point, I would like to respectfully mention Geri Allen may her soul rest in peace. Another arrangement piece of the album is “Night and Day” by Cole Porter. This piece is one of Porter's most familiar compositions. Especially if you're a die-hard Joe Henderson fan like me, you'll remember the version of this song on the "Inner Urge" album. Iyer also particularly focus on the same the arrangement of the piece, and the result was a very enjoyable version. The short but thunder-like drum solo by Sorey, which is split in two by piano solo, is very effective, taking this piece to a whole different level that is already enormous.

Vijay Iyer created music for choreographer Karole Armitage's dance team in 2011 for a project that premiered at Summerstage in Central Park, New York. On the album “Uneasy”, the Vijay Iyer Trio tried to reinvent this work as a collective exploration. There is a constantly changing intensity and a rhythmic drive that constantly travels to a higher level in the album. The album's opening track, "Children of Flint," is a tribute to children who are systematically oppressed by racism from the rest of society. This issue is still up-to-date and has become harmful to the society in general.

Iyer's favorite track on the album is "Combat Breathing". This piece is based on a quote by Frantz Fanon, (He is perhaps one of the most prominent thinkers of the 20th century, on the subject of decolonization and the psychopathology of colonization.) One of the tracks at the center of the album is “Augury”. The solo piano piece Iyer composed just before the pandemic. “Augury” a word used for the old method of divination. Composed in the real time in the studio. This piece is perhaps Iyer's way of seeing the days to come. Maybe he is an oracle.

There is a 72-minutes of journey and discovery in this album, which consists of many stories and topics like these i mentioned. I have told the stories of some of the pieces, and the rest are waiting for you to discover. If you want to watch this harmonious and impressive trio live and witness their recreation of their music just for you once in a life time, I recommend you take your place on the Zorlu PSM Platinum stage on the evening of 20th of November.
