Jerry Bergonzi’nin tenor soundu her daim abartılı güzellikte. Aklıma bir çırpıda gelen iki kelime 'gövdeli' ve 'hisli'. Şubat ayında yayınladığı 7 parçalık “Standard Gonz” albümünün kardeşi “Straight Gonz” albümü 18 Haziranda yayınlandı. Albüm Danimarka’nın ünlü mekânı Dexter Jazz Club sahnesinde kaydedildi. Albüm, Bergonzi’ye ait 4 beste ile birlikte Cole Porter ve Johnny Green’in zamansız besteleri “All Of You” ve “Body and Soul” parçalarından oluşuyor. 72 yaşındaki Bergonzi modern caz sahnesinin en üretken saksafoncularından biri. Dayanımı ve cümlemeleri her zaman üst düzeyde.

“Straight Gonz”, Bergonzi’nin The Modern Jazz Trio ile kaydettiği 6. albümü. Ekip piyanoda Carl Winther, basta Johnny Åman ve davulda Anders Mogensen'den oluşuyor.  Dave Liebman, Tim Hagans ve George Garzone gibi lead solocularla performanslar gerçekleştirmiş kuzeyli üçlü Kuzey Avrupa’nın Amerikalı müzisyenlerle performanslar yaparak güçlendirdikleri sağlam caz mirasına yeni bir halka daha ekliyorlar.

Bergonzi’nin solo kısımlarda geriye çekildiği bölümlerde piyano üçlü harika işler yaratıyor. 36 yaşındaki piyanist Carl Winther, besteci ve müzisyen Jens Winther’in oğlu. Billy Hart, Bill Evans, Daniel Humair, Adam Nussbaum, James Genus, Till Broenner, Markus Strickland, Dick Oats, Dejan Terzic, Eliel Lazo, Moussa Diallo, Mads Vinding, Hugo Rasmussen, Mikkel Nords, Al Campos, Tomas Franck, Doug Raney, Frederik Kronkvist, Afonso Corea gibi pek çok isimle çalarak edindiği deneyimler ve yaratıcı sololarıyla albümün ateşleyicisi formunda. Anders Mogensen 30 yıldan fazla tecrübesiyle Danimarka’nın öncü davulcularından biri olarak bu ekibin meydana gelmesinde büyük pay sahibi. Bergonzi’yi bu albümünde önceki albümlerine kıyasla biraz daha durgun ve sakin buldum. Ama Gonz tabi ki yine de kendi nesli ve önceki nesillerdeki çoğu müzisyenin arasında oldukça konuşkan ve hâlâ çok tehlikeli. Özellikle “Ayaz” parçasını dinlerken neredeyse “Giant Steps” dinlerken olduğu gibi yerimden zıplayıveriyorum.

Kulağa belki klişe gelebilir ama sıcak bir akşam kulüpte müzik dinlerken bol buzlu viskiden aldığınız ilk yudum kadar uyarıcı ve keyif verici bir albüm bu. Kaliteli zaman mı gerekli?

Two words that come to my mind for great Jerry Bergonzi?

Jerry Bergonzi's tenor sound is always exaggerated beautiful. Two adjectives that can come to my mind at once are 'bold' and 'soulful'. The sibling recording of the 7-track "Standard Gonz" album that he released in February, he released the "Straight Gonz" album on June 18th. The album was recorded on the stage of the renowned Danish venue Dexter Jazz Club. The album consists of 4 compositions by Bergonzi, besides the timeless compositions of Cole Porter and Johnny Green, "All Of You" and "Body and Soul". Bergonzi, at the age of 72, is one of the most prolific saxophonists on the modern jazz scene. His stamina and phrases are always at the highest level.

Straight Gonz is Bergonzi's 6th album recorded with The Modern Jazz Trio. Having performed with lead soloists such as Dave Liebman, Tim Hagans and Gerorge Garzone, this Nordic supergroup are adding another signature to Northern Europe's solid jazz heritage, which they have strengthened by performing with American musicians. The piano trio creates great moments in the parts where Bergonzi pulls back in the solo parts. The 36-year-old pianist Carl Winther is the son of world famous composer and musician Jens Winther has been working with musicians such as Billy Hart, Bill Evans,Daniel Humiar, Adam Nussbaum, James Genus, Till Broenner, Markus Strickland, Dick Oats, Dejan Terzic, Eliel Lazo, Moussa Diallo, Mads Vinding, Hugo Rasmussen, Mikkel Nords, Al Campos, Tomas Franck, Doug Raney , Frederik Kronkvist, Afonso Corea, etc., He is in the form of the igniter of the album with his creative solos. With more than 30 years of experience, Anders Mogensen is one of Denmark's pioneer drummers and has a great share in the creation of this team. I found Bergonzi a bit more calmer in this album when i compared to his previous albums. But Gonz of course is still quite talkative and still very dangerous among his generation and most musicians of previous generations. Especially when i listening to “Ayaz”, I almost jump out of my place, like when i listening to “Giant Steps”.

It may sound like a cliché, but this album is as stimulating and enjoyable as the first sip of iced whiskey while listening to music at the club on a warm evening.  Quality time needed?
