Caz müzik firmaları arasında firma karakteri bakımından imzası olan, kurumsal dili oturmuş ECM, Blue Note vb gibi firmalar vardır. Çoğunlukla köklü geçmişe sahip bu firmaların yanına nispeten daha genç bir firma olan Edition Records’un da eklendiğini görüyoruz. Grammy ödüllü albümlerden, ana akımın ses getiren işlerine kadar Edition Records’un kataloğu görsel ve tasarım dili yaklaşımından, 'sound' karakterine kadar bütüncül ve tutarlıdır. Beğenip, beğenmemek elbet tercih meselesi ama kuruluşundan itibaren geçen 13 yılda oluşan bu kimlik oldukça dikkat çekici. Bu noktada, kurucu ve CEO Dave Stapleton’un aklından nelerin geçtiğini merak ediyorum. Edition Records’u eski ve yeni plâk firmaları arasında acaba nasıl konumlandırıyor? Sadece günümüzde yaratılan cazın sesi olarak değil, ses ve müzik prodüksiyonu açısından da geçerli bu merakım. Firmayı takip ettikçe ya kendimiz öğreneceğiz ya da bir röportajda bu soruya cevap bulacağız.

Gelelim yazımızın konusu Chris Potter'ın "Sunrise Reprise" albümüne. 14 Mayısta yayınlanacak albümün ilk 200 baskısı koleksiyonerlere özel numaralı olacak. Ayrıca, tüm plâklar kapak tasarımıyla 'tone sur tone' renklerde ve renkli baskı olarak piyasaya sürülecek.

Kendi dönemlerinin en iyi doğaçlamacılarından Chris Potter, James Francies ve Eric Harland ile 2019 yılında yine Edition Records etiketiyle yayınlanan "Circuits" albümü için bir araya gelmişlerdi. "Sunrise Reprise" ise bu albümünün konsept olarak devamı niteliğinde aAma bazı farklar var. Pandeminin en yoğun yaşandığı dönem sonrası kaydedilen albüm müzisyenlerin aylar sonra kayıt için stüdyoya girdikleri ilk albüm. Uzun süre sonra müzik yapmayı özleyen, enstrümanlarına susamış usta müzisyenlerin enerji alışverişine geçtikleri, tansiyon seviyesinin biraz daha yüksek olduğu bir albüm.

Chris Potter’ın cazın hemen hemen tüm akımları içerisinde müzik ürettiğini göz önünde bulundurarak artık ana akım cazın en önemli figürlerinden biri olduğunu söylemek mümkün. Son dönem kendini daha çok bu müzik türünde ifade ettiğini de hissedebiliyoruz. Toplamda 54 dakika olan albümün farklı uzunluklarda 5 parçaya bölündüğünü söyleyelim. İlk parça “Sunrise and Joshua Trees” kalkışa hazırlanan bir uçağın tekerleği üzerinde yavaş yavaş ilerlemesini çağrıştıran bir intro niteliğinde. İkinci parça "Southbound" ile temponun hızlanışına ve emin adımlarla doruğa çıkışına şahitlik ediyoruz. Albümde “The Peanut” baladı dışında tüm parçaların yüksek kalibre müzisyenlik içeren up-tempo parçalar olduğunu görüyoruz. Ve son parça "Nowhere, Now Here/Sunrise Reprise" mütemadi tekrarlarla örülmüş bir lo-fi beat ile sona eriyor. Yani, ilk başta yükseldiğimiz topraklara güvenli bir iniş yaparak seferi tamamlıyoruz.

Kayıtlar Josh Giunta tarafından GSI Studios’da yapılmış, Mix Christopher Allen tarafından Sear Sound’da ve mastering ise Huntley Miller tarafında HM Mastering’de yapılan albümün prodüktörlüğünü Dave Stapleton ve Louise Holland üstleniyor. Kayıt kalitesi çok temiz, ses çeşitliliği oldukça zengin bir albüm dinliyoruz.

Progressive virtuosity is exactly that

Among the jazz record labels, there are companies that have a signature in terms of company character and have established their corporate language. ECM, Blue Note etc. We see that Edition Records, a relatively young company, is added to these companies, which are mostly around 50 years old companies. From Grammy-winning albums to mainstream hits, Edition Records' catalog is holistic and consistent, from the graphic language to the sound character. It is a matter of preference whether to like it or not, but their corporate identity, which has been formed in the 13 years since its establishment, is very striking. At this point, I wonder what Dave Stapleton (the founder and CEO)  has in his mind. How does he positioning Edition Records among old and new record labels? Not just as the sound of jazz created today, but in terms of sound and music production. We will learn ourselves as we follow the company or find an answer for this question in one of his interview.

Let's talk about the album Chris Potter “Sunrise Reprise.” The first 200 editions of the album, which will be released on May 14th, will be numbered special for collectors. In addition, all the records will be released as a color print in tons of over-tone colors with the cover design. Which looks absolutely brilliant.

Chris Potter, James Francies and Eric Harland, one of the best improvisers of their generation, came together in 2019 for the Circuits album, which was also released by Edition Records. Sunrise Reprise is a continuation of this album as a concept. But there are some differences. The album, recorded after the peak of the pandemic, is the first album that musicians entered the studio for recording several months later. It is an album in which the tension level is slightly higher, where the master musicians who longed to make music after a long time started to exchange energy.

Considering that Chris Potter is a musician that produces music in almost all kinds of jazz forms successfully, we see that he is now one of the most important figures in today’s mainstream jazz. We can also feel that he expresses himself more in this genre of music lately. When we listen to the album, which is 54 minutes 42 sec. in total, is divided into 5 tracks of different lengths. The first track, "Sunrise and Joshua Trees" is an intro that evokes the slow progress of an airplane on the wheel of a plane preparing for takeoff. With the second track, Southbound, we witness the acceleration of the pace and its climax with sure steps. In the album, we see that all songs, except for the ballad "The Peanut", are up-tempo pieces with high caliber musicianship. And the final track Nowhere, Now Here / Sunrise Reprise ends with a lo-fi beat knitted with continuous repetitions. In other words, we complete the expedition by making a safe landing on the lands we climbed at first.
